Dr. Amalu was born in Honolulu Hawai’i and spent his early years immersed in his native culture. Dr. Amalu eventually moved to California and graduated from Serra College Preparatory before beginning his graduate studies. In 1990, Dr. Amalu graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic West and went into private practice in Redwood City California.

As our healthcare center opened, we quickly realized that we were embarking upon an interesting journey. At the time, we were making drastic changes in the way we evaluated and treated patients. Our primary goal was to improve the care we were delivering. We knew that in order to provide better treatment we needed to identify the cause of the patient’s problem first. What we needed was a sensitive test that had the ability to help us find the underlying cause. This would help us to determine if the patient’s problem was due to one major area of dysfunction or more. After evaluating many different technologies, we discovered medical infrared imaging (MIR).

The addition of MIR made a drastic change in our practice. The more we used this technology, the greater the benefits we saw in our patients’ health. With time it became apparent that we had to make this tool available to the general public. Everyone needed direct access, not just the patients in our center. We realized that with this infrared imaging information in hand a patient’s health care provider could focus treatment on the cause of a problem, care for a condition that was previously undetected, or outline a treatment plan for prevention.

“Discovering conditions that have been overlooked, or finding a potential problem far in advance, is extremely rewarding”

We have been very grateful to play such an important part in our community’s health care. Discovering conditions that have been overlooked, or finding a potential problem far in advance, is extremely rewarding. It is so gratifying to hear back from patients whose lives have been drastically improved. This is strikingly so when the condition is as devastating as breast cancer.

On October 6, 1999, Dr. Amalu lost his step-sister Robin to a 5 year battle with breast cancer. At the age of 47, she left two young daughters and the love of her life. She had faithfully listened to her doctor and had both physical breast exams and mammograms as recommended. Her mammograms did not detect her tumors, first in one breast and then later in the other. The sizes of the lumps were large, easily felt, and not detected on the images. What if breast thermography had been readily available to Robin? If breast thermography was available to women on a broader scale, the face of this horrible disease would be changed worldwide.

Robin’s passing clarified what needed to be done. Dr. Amalu realized that he needed to expand upon his own imaging center and add a new focus – education. Through education more offices and imaging centers would be able to provide this lifesaving technology worldwide. Dr. Amalu pursued this idea, approached the recognized medical infrared imaging associations, and was eventually made a board member of the International Academy of Clinical Thermology (IACT), the International Thermographic Society, and the medical director of the International Association of Certified Thermographers. Dr. Amalu was also asked to join the IACT and the American Academy of Thermology’s committees for the development of thermography guidelines. His participation as a co-author has resulted in internationally recognized quality assurance guidelines under which clinical thermographic imaging and interpretation should be performed. And as a post-graduate instructor for the IACT, Dr. Amalu provides education courses for technicians and doctors worldwide.

Dr. Amalu also provides his expertise as an independent board certified clinical thermologist. Similar to a radiologist who reads x-rays for outside offices, Dr. Amalu reads thermograms for outside offices and imaging centers worldwide.
